Another Period Drama Tag

Molly Rebekah tagged me in Elanor's tag, Another Period Drama Tag! Thank you so much, Molly!!!

1.  What was the most recent period drama you watched?  Share what you thought of it.
-Oh goodness, I haven't seen a period drama in a little while. I must soon. But the last I remember, I watched two at the end of December: The When Calls the Heart Christmas special, and The Man Who Invented Christmas.
I LOVED BOTH.
The Man Who Invented Christmas completely blew me away a little more than WCTH, but the latter was still a charming, darling episode.

2.  Do you generally prefer period dramas in the form of a movie or a TV series/mini-series?  Why?
-Generally, a TV series/mini-series. They're longer and generally therefore more accurate to the original book. Besides, the more the better! A 5-hour version is nearly always preferable to a 2-hour version. :D

3.  What is your favorite musical period drama?
-I love The Sound of Music of course (see: blog name, page titles). Also Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (which I would say counts, Cordy :), Mary Poppins, R&H Cinderella...I love musicals and a lot of them are set in period drama eras. :D

4.  Read the book first or watch the movie first?
-Generally, read the book. There are exceptions I've made, but most of the time I prefer to read the book first.

5.  What is a valuable life lesson you learned from a period drama?
-Oh, there's so many. I think I'll go with "He would not be quite so handsome if he were not so rich" from Pride and Prejudice. I think it's important to realize how much economic status matters when choosing a husband and determining attractiveness.
That's right, Mr. Collins. You are not rich, therefore unattractive. You see? Does it make sense now?
Good.

6.  Which period drama hero would you be likely to fall in love with in real life?
-Roger Hamley.
Yes, yes, he's an extremely frustrating little thang with all the silliness but ROGER HAMLEY. Seriously. He is, himself, the exact type of man I would fall in love with in real life. No, not because I'm likely to fall in love with someone who won't love me back for a while. I'm talking he, himself, the person, the personality, the interests. Etc. He's perfect.
Seriously, he's so sweet and perfect and--I'll do another post about him and Molly later and elaborate.

7.  Do you ever like to binge-watch a period drama series?
-OF COURSE.

8.  What things go best with watching a period drama?
-A good friend who agrees with and adds to your commentary.

9.  Which period drama do you think you would fit into best?
-I think I'd do okay in Pride and Prejudice, actually. I could be your Elizabeth Bennet or Fanny Price or Elinor Dashwood...wait a second...
Ha.

10. If you could have any period drama character for a best friend, who would it be?  And why?
-My real life best friend is a Jane Bennet, with some Elizabeth Bennet and Molly Gibson in her. So there's my answer. :)

11. Show us a picture of a period drama costume you wish you could wear in real life.
-I love Victorian styles, also the dresses in Cranford. I can't really think of period dramas with the costume styles I love most that I've seen, so here's some of the darling ladies of Cranford.
12. Are there any period dramas you like to watch during a particular season or holiday?
-Not really, no. Just all of them, all the time. :D

13. Which period drama has your favorite soundtrack?
-North and South has glorious music, also "Collins Canon" from the P&P soundtrack. His theme song has bassoon in it, which I think is perfect.

14. Dream cast your favorite actor and actress in a period drama of your choosing; tell which parts they would play and why.
-I've been wracking my brain for days trying and failing to come up with a good answer. My favorite actress and actor are Emma Watson and Tom Hiddleston--what do you think? Who would you cast them as?

15. Are there any period dramas you like more than one version of?
-Sense and Sensibility 1995 and 2008.

16. What are the top three period dramas that you haven't seen on your to-watch list?
-Umm
The Greatest Showman,
Fiddler on the Roof,
???

17. Show a picture of your favorite period drama hairstyle.
I love Emma's hairstyle in my header.

18. What was your favorite wedding in a period drama?
-
One of my favorites. :)

19. What is your favorite biographical period drama?
-Not sure if it quite counts, but The Man Who Invented Christmas.

20. Which historical novel will you forever recommend to anyone and everyone?
-Oh there are so many good ones! I guess Pride and Prejudice I would recommend to anyone and everyone.

This was such a fun tag!!!

  1. I agree, this is a really fun tag!!

Couldn't agree more about the economic status for determining marriage quip LOL.

Good grief...I have no idea which period drama would be perfect for Tom Hiddleston...or Emma Watson for that matter.

You haven't seen Fiddler on the Roof?! That's one of my favorites - even if Tevye's dream WAS on the really scary side....

I love your new background, it's so elegant and pretty!!

    1. Yes!

Haha, I know, I couldn't choose just one out of all the real answers, so... :D

I know right?! I couldn't come up with a thing!

I need to see it, I know. :)

      Ahh thank you so much!!!

      Thanks for your comment, Catherine!

  2. 1. (Okay, so now I know the answer to the question I asked you on my blog. You have seen WCTH. :) And now I can ask, who is your favorite character/characters in that show?) We haven't seen the Christmas special yet. We don't have TV so we always have to wait until the season comes out on DVD, and then we have to wait even longer until a certain friend gets the DVD so that we can borrow it from her. :)

    2. Agreed. Longer is usually better.

    5. Oh my yes! If you bring Mr. Collins into it, then it makes perfect sense indeed. Haha. ;)

    6. Oh yay! I'll be looking forward to that post. It'll be fun to hear your thoughts on Molly and Roger in more detail. As for myself, I always liked Roger. At least until I saw the movie. For some reason I just didn't like him in the movie. But book Roger, yes. He's very nice. :)

    8. Haha. TOTALLY!

    16. You've never seen Fiddler on the Roof? Wow. I'm quite curious now to know what you'll think of it when you do see it. :)

    18. Aww. Excellent choice. :) And don't you just love the way Robert smiles at Harriet when he takes her arm? They're so dear! <3 <3

Lovely answers, Rae. And a lovely post. This was great fun to read. :D

    1. 1. Yes, I most certainly have. My sister and I watched all four seasons within a week or two. So yes, I meant I get being "into" WCTH itself. :D I adore Rosemary, also Jack. I love them all really, except Mr. Avery. Haha. We don't have TV either so *whispers* my sister and I found it on YouTube the day after it came out. Probably not legal. It's not still up.
But now we have to wait for season 5 to come out on DVD too! But I've seen all the spoiler trailers out there and I CAN'T WAIT.

      5. Oh yes! Quite sensible.

      6. Just posted it! I liked Roger in the book and the movie. Which you probably guessed, haha.

      8. Let's watch period dramas together someday. :D

      16. I know!! I'll watch it soon.

      18. YES I DO. I adore them.

Thanks for your lovely comment, Miss March!!!

    2. I like Jack and Lee and Rosemary and...I actually like Mr. Avery, too. I don't know, I just find him amusing and I love how he's so smart about everything and how the bad guys can't get away with anything when he's around. I did dislike him VERY STRONGLY in the first couple seasons though. The whole storyline with his wife didn't make me think very highly of him. But once she went out of it and that storyline started to feel like it never even existed (it might not feel that way to you since you watched all the seasons so close together), he did start to grow on me quite a bit. I wish they would just make him get back with his wife though. I don't see why they can't work things out.

I've been watching the spoiler trailers for season 5, too! :D

    3. Hmm, I see what you mean. Yeah, he's really not bad after all that sketchy stuff, but I think you're right; it's hard to forget that stuff when I watched it all so close together. I agree, they should work that out! By the way, did you know that the actor and actress who play Mr. Avery and Nora were married and divorced in real life? Interesting fact. Not sure what to think of it. :p
(I didn't like his whole "relationship" thing with Abigail either...that was weird. I'm all for Miss Abigail and Pastor Frank.)
I CAN'T WAIT FOR SEASON 5! It's gonna be amazing.

    4. Mr. Avery and Nora were married and divorced in real life?? REALLY? Wow. I'm not sure what to think of that either except...that is really sad. :( I wish it wasn't so hard for people to keep their marriages together.

(Uh, yeah. Pastor Frank and Abigail are a MUCH better match! They should show more of them together though, because sometimes it hardly seems like they're a real couple. Pastor Frank just isn't in it enough.)

I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO IT TOO! :D I also want to go back and watch the first two seasons because it's been a long time.

    5. I know, right? It's always sad to see that.

(Seriously! I hope Pastor Frank comes back more in season 5.)

  3. Gaaaah! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new look, Rae!! <3

I also loved reading your answers. :)

    - I haven't TMWIC, but I really want to because 1) Dan Stevens and 2) Charles Dickens.
    - Oooh, good one! I like your lesson for no. 5, definitely. Never would have thought of it, but you're so right. It is, unfortunately, quite true sometimes.
    - Haha, yes, the ongoing commentary of a period drama (or any movie) is the best!! Watching movies with non-talkers is frustrating.
    - Aaw, Harriet & Robert Martin's wedding! Sweet. Love that answer.

    1. AAAH THANK YOU!!!

YES. Dan Stevens did an incredible job. It was so good.

Haha, it was very facetious but as you said, unfortunately true.

Yes! It would be the best thing ever to get all the people we know in the blogging world and watch, like P&P together.

I adore Harriet and Robert, I'm so glad you do too! :)

      Thanks for your comment, Elanor!!!

  4. Ahh Rae, I LOVED this post!! And you were right, quite a few of our answers were very similar! #kindredspirits

Ooh, that Christmassy photo from When Calls the Heart is so darling! I really just need to start watching that show already.

Yes, I totally agree with your answer to number 2--the more the better, definitely!

Haha, I love your answer to number 4! So on the flip side of that, I suppose that if Mr Collins had ten thousand a year, he would have been irresistibly handsome, right? ;P Haha!

Ooh yes, the costumes in Cranford are so pretty! I especially love that gown that Sophy wears.

YES the North and South soundtrack is just awesome, especially Northbound Train (all the heart eye emojis for that one!) and Thornton's Walk. <3

It really is so hard to choose between those two adaptations of S&S, isn't it?

Emma's braided updo is seriously beautiful! I think it'd make for a gorgeous wedding hairstyle.

Aww yes, I forgot about Harriet and Robert Martin's wedding!! So, so cute. :)

Yep, 100% agree with your last answer! Also, I love that photo; the necklace is so pretty! (Did you take it yourself? If so, you did a great job!)

I absolutely loved this post Rae! (If you couldn't tell by my crazy long comment!) And your new blog look is just gorgeous. <3

    1. Seriously though!!!

Okay, Molly, here's the thing with When Calls the Heart; I've finally read the books and can explain to you before you get your dreams dashed!
So. The When Calls the Heart books are not, NOT, anything like the TV show. I'm fairly certain the TV show was not based on those books at all. I read the first...3?... and I loved them, but yeah, it's not the same story as the TV show at all.
However. Janette Oke and her daughter Laurel Oke Logan wrote 3 other books, which I'm currently reading, that were written as companions to the WCTH TV show. So it's closer to the story and people of the TV show, with, well, the usual discrepancies between books and their adaptations.
So there you go! If you watch the show don't be expecting anything like the books. :D

Anyway, on to the rest of your comment after that long tangent. :D

That is exactly right, Mr. Collins would have been a charming, handsome man if he had Darcy's fortune. :D

      Yes!!

      OH I KNOW. Yessss.

It is, so I don't choose! Both S&S's are good for their own reasons.

Oooh, it would be so pretty for a wedding hairstyle!

      Thank you; yes I did!

I'm so glad you loved it! You're the best.
      Thank you so much!
Thanks for your AMAZING long comment, Molly Rebekah!!! (Long comments are the best.)

    2. Thanks for the info on When Calls the Heart, Rae! I've actually only read the first book (I still need to get around to the others someday!), so I think that will make it easier for me to watch it and enjoy it as a completely different story. :)

Oh yes, I have seen those books that you mentioned that Janette Oke wrote with her daughter! Maybe I'll have to give them a try someday, too. :)

  5. Lucky!!! I ssssssssooooo want to watch TMWIC!!!!!!!

Hmm... what could Tom and Emma be in? I'm going to be thinking about it all day now.

Also, I love this blog look. It is so pretty! Now I think I need a new one...
